Spring 2014 Trends

With the start of the new year, let’s talk about what we’re going to be seeing (and wearing) a lot of come springtime.

Print Mixing: Spring is the perfect time of year to experiment with mixing prints. Any other time of year, prints can be a little overwhelming. But after surviving what will seem like the longest winter ever, I think I speak for all of us when I say we’ll be more than happy to break out the colorful prints.

Calf-length Everything: Say goodbye to the plethora of minis in stores and in your closet, and say hello to anything calf-length. Hemlines this spring will graze along the calf drawing more attention to the ankle than any other part of the leg. What I do love about this length is that our shoes get a lot more attention too. So don’t be afraid to say goodbye to the short shorts and skirts this spring, just do it. Embrace the calf-length and show off those shoes.

Metallics: Something else you can embrace? Metallics. Treat metallics as a neutral this spring and pair with other neutrals or go with an all metallic look.

Fringe: Fringe has never really not been on my radar – that’s the flower child in me though. For me, fringe is just one of those details that makes everything better. Bags, sweaters, tops, vests, skirts, anything really. Fringe is never a bad decision.

Flats: From a fashion lover who rarely wears heels, I have to express my excitement when I see flats on the runway. Of course, flats are never out, that would be illogical. But the fact that they’re actually in, is awesome. The IT shoes this spring are going to be flats – I love it.

Athletic Inspired Clothes: This is another spring trend I’m really digging too. Everyday, I have to dress practical but also stylish, and it’s not always the easiest thing to do. With athletic inspired trends surfacing for this spring, hopefully it’ll be a lot easier to find those pieces that make a statement but are still super comfortable. Thank you, fashion gods.

Long Pleats: I have always, always, always loved pleats of all kind. They’re just so cool. What’s funny about design is that movement in a piece is indescribably beautiful. But there’s also something I love about a clean, wonderfully structured piece as well. Pleats, especially long, give you a little bit of both worlds. You can see the structure, but in the movement of the garment, you see the swiftness in the movement of the design as well. Simply gorgeous.

Short Pleats & Menswear Shirts: And last but not least, menswear, menswear and, did I mention, menswear. If anyone can name just one year and one season were woman’s fashion has not been inspired by menswear, well then you win. But seriously, it seems there is never not at least a little inspiration from the classic menswear pieces. And thank goodness for that. I LOVE a great spin on menswear pieces. There’s something super chic and trendy about a beautiful woman in menswear inspired looks.

So as soon as spring arrives, give these trends a try this year. And since it could be a while until spring does arrive, you’ll have plenty of time to prepare. Happy spring.
