Apart from the fact that women love both handbags and shoes, it’s these elements that can make or break an outfit. Designers understand that shoes and purses are a big part of a woman’s statement about herself. And, many high-end apparel companies now produce at least one or the other. Italian fashion house Prada is as famous for its shoes as it is for its clothing. And it also produces a range of women’s handbags and purses.

Best known for its “luggage”, Louis Vuitton took their product line to new heights a few years ago, with a purse starting at around $1,000. Yet, so popular has the company become that its logo and trademark foulard pattern is instantly recognizable to people across the globe, even if they don’t follow fashion closely. In fact the company’s foulard pattern has become such a mark of style and quality that in one risqué photo shoot a few years ago, rapper Lil Kim posed with her entire body painted with the pattern.

A woman can be more adventurous with her choice of shoes and purse than she might be with her dress. A snakeskin skirt might be primarily for the young and very daring. But snakeskin high heel shoes can be sexy and sophisticated, while a purse in the same material can be classy and classic.

And shoes and purses help to set the mood of an outfit. A black dress with black high heel shoes and purse might be appropriate for an upscale cocktail party or a more formal occasion. But the same black dress worn with calf-length black boots and patent leather bag might suggest nightclubbing, or a “night out with the girls”. Similarly, a floral Liberty print dress with brown leather shoes and bag might say ‘casual’, but, worn with army-style boots and denim bag, and the outfit says ‘hippy-chic’.

But, let’s not forget; purses and handbags are also practical, and allow women to take their essentials everywhere. While this usually means cosmetics, cell phones and other portable high-tech gadgets, this accessory is so important to women that Sony is currently advertising its revolutionary, miniature ‘Vaio P’ laptop as being small enough to fit in your purse.

So, if a woman owns lots of shoes and a few purses, then its probably because she has a lot of different things going on in her life. Or because she knows how to make her wardrobe more versatile and interesting by selecting the right shoes and purse for the occasion.
