If you want your name to appear on the latest designer fashion labels, then there’s a lot of work ahead of you.  Fortunately, if you truly aspire to design fashion, then much of the job will be more fun than work.  Don’t be led astray, though, as the process of getting your name on those designer fashions does take a lot of effort and commitment on your part.

Is It Truly Your Passion to Design Fashion?

The first question you need to ask yourself when determining if you should pursue a career in designer fashion is whether or not you truly have the drive it takes.  This starts with a true desire to express your creativity through your fashion designs.  You don’t have to be a great artist, as there are tools to help you create sketches; but you do need to have a vision that you want to convey through your styles.  There is much to learn and to perfect when you decide to design fashion for a career, and the job will be much easier and more enjoyable when you truly love what you’re doing.

Can You Handle Criticism?

Even the biggest pros who design fashion find themselves at the mercy of the critics.  It can be devastating to hear what other people have to say when they don’t understand or appreciate your designs.  Those who want to succeed need to have a bit of a thick skin when it comes to criticism.  Of course, that’s only part of the equation.  You also need to be able to keep an open mind about the suggestions that others make.  While you don’t want to compromise your own vision, you do need to consider what your audience thinks.  After all, you goal is probably to have other people wear you designer fashions.

Are You Committed to Working Hard?

Those who design fashion put their hearts and souls into their work.  Again, if you are passionate about what you’re doing, this becomes a much easier burden to bear.  If, however, you are looking for an easy way to start a career, you might need to reconsider your choice to design fashion for a living.  While some designers do have glamorous lives, they had to work very hard to get to that point.  Unfortunately, it’s not all just about showing at Fashion Week and meeting with celebrity clients.  Of course, those are both possibilities if you are willing to put in the time and energy that is required to become successful. 

Are You a Talented Designer?

Do friends often admire the outfits you’ve created?  Better yet, to strangers admire your designs when they see you wearing them?  If so, then this could be a sign that you really have the aptitude necessary to design fashion as a career.  Fashion is about more than drawing a picture, rather, it includes an understanding of how fabrics behave, how to mix textures, and how to translate your ideas from your mind to a finished garment that real people can wear.  Those who can do this while appealing to an audience may just have the talent needed to do the job correctly.

Are You Willing to Learn?
