Could your personal fashion style eventually lead to your own fashion business or line?

Sometimes I question the business sense of fashion designers. No, really. Have you ever noticed how their best items disappear for good after one season? I’m talking about those garments that fit fantastically, and always get you compliments. That’s right. You can pretty much guarantee that they’re never going to make those again.

So, if you’re like me, your wardrobe probably stretches back years, with your favorite items more than a little faded and worn out around the edges. I mean, why do you think they started selling jeans with holey knees? Because people kept wearing their best pair until they literally ripped. And then they kept on wearing them. And what about your favorite suit or dress? Better keep it in the wardrobe and bring it out once or twice a year, right? Better be careful not to spill cocktail on it, right? Because you know you will never find anything like it again.

Well, no surprises here, but this is why a few of us got into fashion in the first place – sheer frustration at other designers. My first design successes was selling a jacket I had made to a friend of mine, because, she told me, she had been looking for exactly that jacket, but couldn’t find one like it anywhere, anymore – wrong season. I still have friends that take apart old dresses – literally falling apart from wear – and use the pattern pieces to make themselves new ones in new fabric.

You have an interest in fashion – hey, if you didn’t you wouldn’t be reading this. And, if you’re that up on fashion, you probably get compliments on your style. Think about that – your style. Not Armani’s, or Calvin Klein’s, or Versace’s, but yours. Ever wondered how your name and your brand might stack up against those others? If you’re hoarding clothing, or getting compliments on your personal style, the odds are pretty good. So you might want to take the leap into designing your own clothing line. A lot of very successful fashion design companies started small – sometimes ridiculously small. One designer I know – now successful – started her line in her Dad’s shed, in the back garden. And a few years ago, there really wasn’t the same kind of guidance and information available to the budding designer. Personally, I recommend www.startingaclothingline.com. Their site will give you all the information you need..
